Our 10 step guide to customer loyalty

Customers today are fully aware of how valuable they are to the businesses they visit and therefore expect much more from restaurants than just good food. Attracting customers to your restaurant is great but what good is it if they leave with the intention of never coming back.

Thanks to Websites like Tripadvisor, Yelp and social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter it’s never been easier for customers to tell restaurants, shops and hotels for example exactly what they think, and whether their experience was positive or negative can have a huge impact on your business. Here is our 10 step guide to impress your customers and keep them coming back for more!

Good interior fit out

They way you design your restaurant space can have a dramatic effect on your business. You may serve incredible food but if your customers are uncomfortable they’re unlikely to come back. When designing the layout of your restaurant make sure there’s plenty of space, if you have too many tables for example, you’ll have created a chaotic atmosphere with staff and customers crashing into each other constantly. When you’re looking for interior fit out companies be sure to choose a professional, experienced team who are dedicated to delivering excellence, this will make all the difference to your business.

Loyalty rewards

It may seem obvious but using loyalty rewards is a tried and tested way to boost customer loyalty. Although they do work, you may want to look further than standard punch cards which people can get anywhere and often forget about or lose. Digital loyalty programmes and tiered reward systems are a great option. Nando’s for example offer Green, Orange and Red rewards for their customers; the more often they visit, the better rewards they get! Digital loyalty programmes also give you the ability to collect customer data like their phone number and email address, meaning you can contact them again with newsletters and inform them about special offers and events

Occasional freebies

Giving a little something away for free now and then will make your customers feel special and they’ll be sure to come back. If you have stock that you want to get rid of, you could give out some free samples or tasters. You could also offer someone a free drink or a dessert if they’re celebrating their birthday or an anniversary, it would really make their day!

Entertainment and special events

People decide to dine out over eating at home because they want to treat themselves, to do something different or simply have some fun! Offer live music once a week, an exclusive tasting, a special kids deal, a quiz or a bingo night and be sure to post about these events on social media.

Support local

Consumers nowadays tend to want to support local and small businesses over big corporations. Boost loyalty by showing customers that your business is dedicated to helping others. Participate in local food festivals and play music by local artists, you could even invite them to do a live performance. You could also feature artwork from local artists in your restaurant and give customers the opportunity to buy pieces from you.

Remember customer preferences

Take time to make a note of regular customers’ information and ordering habits. Remember their names so you can greet them when they walk in. Remember their dietary preferences, allergies and how they like their coffee so you can anticipate their needs; this will make them feel really special, they will be sure to keep coming back and they may even bring their friends.

Be charitable

Take the opportunity to show your customers that you care about current issues. You could donate food to a local shelter, or donate the profits from a certain dish or drink to a charitable cause. Some restaurants even offer free Christmas dinner for homeless people.

Ask for feedback

All feedback, whether it’s positive or negative, will help your business and show you what you’re doing right and what you could be doing better. Customers will have nothing to gain from giving false feedback, so you can be pretty sure that they’re telling you the truth. Doing your part for different causes and helping others will not only do wonders for your restaurant’s image, but it’ll make you feel good too!

Change up the menu

Although your regular customers will probably have a favourite dish already, you don’t want to let them to get bored. Make seasonal changes to your menu or consider offering daily changing specials to keep things fresh and fun!

Make the most of social media

Social media has given businesses the opportunity to connect directly with their customers, you’d be a fool not to use it. Post pictures regularly, make use of hashtags and let customers know about special events or deals. You could even hold competitions on social media and get people to follow and share your posts.

Share original content with your customers, whether that be a video on how to make a perfect martini, a jokey tweet or a blog post on all the different things that taste better with hummus!

Great food and service

When it comes down to it, the most important thing you can do for your business is make sure you are providing great food and service. Your dishes don’t have to be ultra-fancy or complicated. Fresh, tasty food and friendly, dedicated staff are essential to any restaurant or cafe business.
